While the food scene in Copenhagen - and since then Scandinavia - has undergone a complete Cinderella transformation from almost overlooked to the hippest destination for Michelin stars and new food trends, there are still some places who honor the classic, Danish cuisine.
Right on the border between the inner city of Copenhagen and neighborhood Østerbro you will find such a place – namely Restaurant Under Uret. The restaurant – almost a local institution - serves a classic, Danish lunch deeply rooted in the traditions.
Here open sandwiches are served with pride. The restaurant is extremely popular; both among locals and tourists who come to dive into the culinary treasure chamber, which is located in the cellar restaurant, which also counts the National Museum of Art, Botanical Gardens and the Hirschsprung Collection in Østre Anlæg among the very closest neighbors.
The sandwiches are large and there is something for everyone. Herring - and in several varieties - is an obvious ingredient, the same is the buttered flounder and of course a thick-cut piece of ribs with red cabbage and cucumber salad also has its place on the menu. A menu consisting exclusively of dishes which - and not without reason - have survived for several generations.
At Restaurant Under Uret the food is made with respect for the ingredients, the craft and the guests - and, of course, everything is made from the very bottom. This also applies to a selection of accompanying drinks, snaps, which stands beautiful and golden in bottles at the bar.
Of course, this year's traditional festivals have a special place during the clock. For example, if you want to experience a Mortens Aften menu (November 10th) in accordance with the traditions, you should reserve your table soon.
There is also the possibility of booking the restaurant - or parts of it - to companies where you can sit in secluded rooms and let you and your guests be spoiled by the solid housekeeper's kitchen before it became New Nordic.
In a fast changing world, it's nice to find the time pockets where tradition and quality still go hand in hand. Such a time pocket can be found in Restaurant Under Uret.
