The new hang out place Stempel on Vesterbro has both the space, the gastronomy and the ambition to embrace its citizens from morning to late evening - actually until dawn if the party just doesn't want to stop in Stempels gorgeous space on the corner of Istedgade and Enghave Plads.
Stempel opened on the 4 of March 2015 and calls itself both a bar and a kitchen and where the opening hours reflects Stempels wish to become a constant in the life of its costumers: Stempel opens already at 9 o clock where one can enjoy Italian coffee, omelets and a breakfast plate. From 10 o clock the choice also includes brunch.
From noon and until late evening, city dwellers can enjoy hot dishes from Stempels simple but delicious a la carte menu. The food is rooted in the relaxed brasserie tradition and gives one the opportunity of experiencing everything from light, assorted starters and creative salads to Italian pasta and sandwiches to juicy steaks. Even though the menu has a classic bistro profile, Rumanian chef Cosmin Pestina has anyway transmitted a great deal of personality into each dish, twisting them into something new: in the hour of writing, Stempel served a ‘waldorf style salad’, where home smoked duck breast was tossed with crisp veggies and the apples had been swopped with fresh slices of pear. Really sympathetic also the creme brûlée which had rhubarb incorporated as a distinct element, while the steaks could be topped with either a creamy mushroom sauce or a ‘chimichurri’ salsa verde.
The wine card is simple but exquisitely made with an emphasis on french bottles that can be enjoyed until late where the lights are dimmed and Stempel turns itself into a great place to party - the waiters serves both ‘twist soda’ without alcohol and cocktails from the beautiful bar in the centre of the room which constitutes an important part of Stempels interior identity. It divides the space into two: one with a high ceiling, light bulbs, windows and lots of tables that face Istedgade and a more intimate one close to the open kitchen section where the chefs table is situated and guests can follow the work of the cooks.
Stempel is quite striking because of its interior that exudes a great love for Copenhagen: co-owner Jesper Schneider is a passionate collector of antiquities and fun stuff full of anecdotes and he has decorated the many square metres in Stempel with things such as container panels, old teatre lamps, railway artefacts and even lots of old suitcases from the 20ties that are stacked as improvised benches.
Stempel can accommodate around 86 seated guests but will expand during the summer with lots of tables outside as well in order to profit from the great atmosphere on Enghave Plads and Istedgade. Stempel also books bands and musicians to entertain their guests and will soon be able to be open until 5 o clock in the morning during weekends.
