Restaurant Tivolihallen is among Copenhagen's oldest restaurants. There are two simple reasons as to why it still exists today – more than 200 years after the doors first opened to guests here in the basement of Vester Voldgade 91. Respect for food and for the guest.
This simple recipe has led several locals and tourists alike to this famed restaurant for a nice lunch. But now you no longer have to work within the central part of Copenhagen to experience Tivolihallen as the restaurant recently decided to stay open for dinner as well.
The menu at Tivolihallen consists mainly of Danish open sandwiches. Here everything is made from scratch and with the season's freshest ingredients. So whether you order an umami-rich chicken salad with bacon that has lots of flavor and bite, or a creamy beef tartar with capers, finely chopped red onion and a delicious sour pickles, there is plenty of heartiness and love to the food at Tivolihallen.
Of course - as a proud maritime nation - there are plenty of fish on the menu as well. You will find three varieties of open sandwiches with herring, salmon, smoked eel, prawns and a flounder, which has ever so lightly touched the hot pan. The prices are definitely reasonable for the big portions.
This well-known eatery likewise has a small selection of dinner plates with traditional, Danish cuisine before it became part of the New Nordic wave.
Even though Tivolihallen is at basement level, lots of daylight enters, so all associations with seedy basement bars will quickly evaporate. The place is light, cozy and decorated with the same traditional soul as the food.
Outside is a nice courtyard, which is perfect for those hot summer days. Here you can sit undisturbed in central Copenhagen and enjoy the flavorful taste of the kitchens of old. It is unpretentious, classic Danish gastronomy at its best.
