At Watami, a Japanese restaurant in Gentofte, young Willum Ji Cheang Zhou serves tasty sushi, which both in selection and preparation strives for perfection. Here there are no shortcuts, everything is made from the bottom, including the tasty accompanying sauces, which really light up the flavors and hits the right balance.
To accomplish such precision in the art form of sushi can take years, but at Watami it seems they have managed to skip a few years without any stagnation or decline. The level here is really high.
The delicate tastes and textures are adjusted with the accuracy and attention it takes to constantly improve.
But at Watami, it's not only the classic nigiries and shashimier you can order. There are lots of other dishes on the menu, such as a beautiful tuna tartar with avocado and raw egg yolk, full of umami.
At Watami you can choose to go a la carte, or there is the extremely reasonable offer of as much as you can eat (includes most of the dishes from the menu) for a sultry sum of 208 Danish kroner.
It's not just Watami's sauces and dressings that Willum has stirred up himself – likewise he has also mixed up refreshing cocktails that will suit the wonderful dishes of the place.
In addition, there is a good selection of sake, beer or wines, so whatever you would prefer to these Japanese delights, you probably will find it at Watami.
The restaurant is decorated with light brown wood furniture that fits well into the large bright room, where Japanese and Nordic simpleness go hand in hand.
It's no wonder that Watami is extremely popular – even the smallest of details are thought of here – and it is therefore highly recommended to book a table in advance if you want to enjoy some of the best sushi in and around Copenhagen.
